Where were you when Barry hit #715?
History has been made!!!
Barry Bonds* hits his 715th* homerun to pass The Babe, and is now chasing Hank Aaron's 755.
Mixed feelings/reactions across the board.
I am happy for Barry, and happy that this record was broken in my life time. But, like many other who care for the integrity of the game, the steroid issue makes me stop short of throwing a party in his honor.
But i wil say..way before BALCO, Barry's been hitting his homeruns. It became questionable when BALCO came into the picture and he hit 73 homers in 2001. So its not like he was a mediocre player who might or might not have taken steroids intentionally to be good. An already good player just turned exceptional in 2 seasons.
So...what i do is...i subtract the number of homers hit in the questionable years from the average homers hit in the preceeding 5 yrs, when he was without a doubt, clean and discard the overflow (i.e the questionable homers).
My calculations come up to about 673 LEGIT homers hit. Which is still pretty freaking phenomenal!
And if you look at all the awards he racked up pre-questionable BALCO years, then it's quite clear that Barry Bonds really is the most phenomenal player of our era.
